MARLBOROUGH 1 WINSHILL GOLD 2
So the season ended with a narrow defeat in a well contested game but although this season has generally been one to forget this was a decent performance against a good team who we would always expect to have a competetive game . In fact Winshill must wonder what happened in between our two games as the last meeting provided us with a 1-0 win and a record number of games without conceeding. At that time we were on the crest of a wave having recorded 8 wins on the run conceeding 1 goal but today we approached this game having conceeded 23 in our last 5 games. I could write a book on some of the events of this season but to avoid subverting the course of justice i better not !!!! However today we had a fully committed squad of 13 and they produced a performance of great credit and in my view deserved something from the game. Again we managed to gift the opening goal and did not help ourselves by going 2 down before half time but our second half performance was full of effort and determination and i could not fault any player for effort. I will take this opportunity to single out the attitude of a player who plays at a higher level on a saturday with Burton Albion in the midland premier league . Charlie Rumin joined Burton very much as a squad player based on his potential but he has clearly developed as a result of that opportunity and i now understand he is a regular starter and influential player in that team BUT he still gives 100% to Marlborough on a sunday and that is why he will succeed in the future. There were some other decent performances today Mitchell wade -jones finally showed what we all knew was there but seems to have taken him 24 games to show others and Daniel Turnock had an excellent game in the right back position . Callum Smithson is back to his best and while we need to add a couple to this squad the basis of a decent team , able to challenge next season is very much in evidence given this performance. So this is our first ever season we have finished out of the top 3 positions but i saw enough today to confirm that we are NOT finished as a force to be reckoned with in the future.
